What is a psychotherapist?

A psychotherapist is a professional who specializes in helping people with emotional, behavioral and mental problems.

He uses psychotherapy, a therapeutic method based on speech and interaction, to help his patients explore, understand and treat their psychological difficulties.

Historically, these specialists were mainly psychologists or physicians, such as psychiatrists. However, in Quebec, since a legislative amendment in 2012, other health professionals, such as guidance counselors, criminologists, occupational therapists, nurses, psychoeducators, marriage and family therapists, social workers and sexologists, can also obtain a license to practice this discipline. This opening has also enabled those who practised this profession before this date to continue to do so, by obtaining a license thanks to the recognition of acquired rights.

In Quebec, strict criteria must be met in order to practice as such and bear this title. Firstly, the practitioner must be a member of one of the recognized professional orders, ranging from guidance counselors to social workers. Secondly, a solid academic background is required, including a master's degree in the field of mental health and human relations. In addition, specific theoretical training totalling 765 hours is required. This training covers various fields, such as theoretical models of intervention, psychopathology, ethics and deontology.

In addition to this theoretical training, a 600-hour practical internship is required. This internship enables future specialists to apply their knowledge, develop their clinical skills and ensure effective, appropriate care for their patients. This profession therefore requires rigorous training and supervised practice, to guarantee the quality of the care provided.

Why consult a psychotherapist?

Life is full of challenges, complex situations and emotions that can be difficult to manage. In this context, consulting a psychotherapist can be a life-saving approach. Therapy offers a safe space in which to explore feelings, behaviors and thoughts, guided by a trained professional.

All of us, at one time or another, may feel the need to make an appointment with a psychotherapist. This need may arise when a situation becomes too burdensome to manage alone, be it relationship problems, professional stress, bereavement, existential crises or any of life's other challenges. Consulting not only helps you understand the source of your problems, but also gives you the tools you need to deal with them and move forward.

The role of the psychotherapist is to help the person navigate through their emotions and behaviors, identify negative patterns and work on transforming them. In short, a consultation with a psychotherapist is an opportunity for personal growth & well-being. It's about recognizing that it's sometimes necessary to ask for help to weather life's storms and emerge stronger.

When should you seek the services of a psychotherapist?

The question of when to consult a psychologist or psychotherapist is a frequent and legitimate one. Indeed, life confronts us with challenges and emotions that are sometimes difficult to manage alone. While everyone experiences moments of doubt or sadness, there are certain signals that should alert you.

One of the most obvious signs is depression. If you experience persistent sadness, loss of interest in daily activities, or intrusive negative thoughts, it's crucial to seek help. Similarly, if you notice drastic changes in your behavior, such as sleep disturbances, appetite problems or chronic fatigue, a session with a psychotherapist may prove beneficial.

Before seeking help, it's common to wonder whether it's the right thing to do. However, you don't have to wait until you've reached a breaking point before seeking help - on the contrary. If you feel the need to talk, to understand your emotions or to define goals to improve your well-being, this is ample justification for a consultation.

The therapeutic process is an adventure in self-discovery. It offers a safe space to explore your emotions, behaviors and thoughts. With the support of a professional, you can define and achieve the goals that will enable you to regain balance and serenity.
