Psychoeducator
Help for adjustment difficulties, emotional and behavioural challenges at any age.
What is a psychoeducator?
Psychoeducators are mental health professionals who focus on assessment and psychoeducational intervention (behavioral and socio-emotional re-education) with people who have adjustment difficulties and suffer from emotional, behavioral, and/or cognitive problems.
The psychoeducator works with people of all ages to help them understand, address, and prevent mental health disorders. Psychoeducators help their clients understand their condition, develop coping skills, identify their strengths and weaknesses, manage their symptoms, and improve their overall functioning.
At Familio, psychoeducators work closely with other professionals such as psychologists, marriage and family therapists and psychosocial workers to ensure a comprehensive approach to mental health and social services. They also collaborate with the various living environments in which the person participates, as needed.
As mental health professionals, psychoeducators must have specialized training in psychoeducation and be members of the Order of Psychoeducators of Quebec to practice. They must also adhere to ethical and professional practice standards in their work and maintain high standards of training to ensure they stay up to date on the latest developments in mental health.
Why seek a psychoeducation consultation?
You may turn to psychoeducation services for different reasons. First, consulting a psychoeducator allows for a comprehensive assessment of the emotional, behavioral, or cognitive difficulties experienced and to obtain tailored solutions, resources, and recommendations.
Psychoeducators can also assess a person's adaptive capacities and help them put strategies in place to cope with more anxiety-provoking moments of daily life, in addition to providing emotional support. Finally, psychoeducation consultations can also help improve interpersonal relationships, such as the parent-child relationship or family/parental relationships in general.
When should you use the services of a psychoeducator?
If you or a family member have been diagnosed with a mental disorder, a psychoeducator can help you better understand that disorder and develop strategies to address it. In addition, as mentioned previously, psychoeducators can work in collaboration with other mental health professionals to provide effective interventions for a variety of mental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADHD), depression, anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders and personality disorders.
Everyone can go through difficult times, face challenges, and feel more mentally fragile. However, when your situation does not seem to improve, when you feel that the tools and resources around you are insufficient, when you experience a sense of distress, or when you have difficulty completing your daily activities, professional help may be necessary. Seeking health services and/or a mental health professional will help you gain clarity about your situation while helping you develop concrete tools to regain your psychological well-being.
